Taxpayer Identification Number

A Taxpayer Identification Number, or TIN, is your unique number in the Nigerian tax system. Nothing formal happens without it: no corporate bank account, no tender, no import documentation.

What taxpayer identification number means

A TIN is your identity in the tax system.

It is a unique number attached to a taxpayer, whether a company, an individual, a partnership or an incorporated trustee. Every filing, payment, assessment and clearance runs against it.

It is not a tax and it says nothing about whether you owe anything. It identifies who you are, so that the tax authority can attribute what you file and what you pay.

Companies are administered by the Federal Inland Revenue Service. Individuals are administered by the internal revenue service of their state of residence, with the Joint Tax Board coordinating individual registration nationally.

Having one is the precondition for almost everything a formal business does, which is why it appears on so many checklists.

How it is used

You will be asked for it constantly.

Opening a corporate bank account. Bidding for a government or corporate contract. Opening a Form M for an import. Applying for a tax clearance certificate. Filing any return. Registering for VAT. Applying for many licences and permits. Remitting PAYE as an employer.

For companies, the process changed usefully. The Corporate Affairs Commission and the tax authorities integrated registration, so a company incorporated in Nigeria is now generally issued a TIN as part of incorporation rather than through a separate application afterwards. New founders should check their incorporation documents rather than assuming they need to apply.

For individuals, registration is with the internal revenue service of the state of residence, and the Joint Tax Board operates a national system for individual taxpayer identification.

Having the number is not the end of it. A company with a TIN and no filings is a registered taxpayer in default, and the number is what the authority uses to notice that.

Key features

  • A unique identifier for a taxpayer in the Nigerian tax system
  • Issued to companies, individuals, partnerships and incorporated trustees
  • Companies are administered by the FIRS; individuals by their state revenue service
  • Now generally issued to companies as part of CAC incorporation
  • Required for corporate bank accounts, tenders, imports and tax clearance
  • Identifies the taxpayer; it says nothing about liability

How this works in Nigeria

The integration of TIN issuance with company incorporation removed a step that used to catch founders out, and it is worth knowing about because older guidance still describes a separate application.

What has not changed is the obligation that follows. A TIN issued at incorporation puts the company in the system from day one, which means the authority expects filings. Companies that incorporated, obtained a TIN automatically and then never filed anything are visible as non filers, and the position accumulates.

For individuals, the practical trigger is usually a specific need: a bank requirement, a visa application, a property transaction or a tender. Registration with the state revenue service is straightforward, and it is the same number that supports a personal tax clearance certificate.

The tax reform legislation passed in 2025 revised significant parts of the Nigerian tax framework and the administering arrangements. Anybody registering now, or dealing with a first filing, should confirm the current process rather than following a description written a few years ago.

One practical point for businesses: the TIN, the CAC records and the bank mandate should all carry exactly the same company name. Mismatches between them are a routine cause of delay in account opening and in import documentation.

TIN vs RC number vs VAT registration

Three identifiers a Nigerian company holds, issued by different bodies for different purposes.

The RC number is issued by the Corporate Affairs Commission on incorporation. It identifies the company as a registered entity and appears on the certificate of incorporation.

The TIN identifies the company in the tax system. It is what filings, payments and clearances run against, and it is now generally issued alongside incorporation.

VAT registration is a further step within the tax system, registering the business to charge and remit value added tax. It is tied to the TIN rather than replacing it.

A company asked for its tax details should know which is being requested. Banks and corporate clients frequently ask for all three plus the tax clearance certificate, and a business that cannot produce them delays its own onboarding.

Limits and risks

A TIN is identification, not compliance. Holding one while filing nothing simply makes the default visible.

It also does not merge the systems. Company tax with the FIRS and personal tax with a state revenue service remain separate obligations, and a director cannot rely on the company's position for their own.

Records can be inconsistent. Where a company name was changed, or details differ between the CAC and the tax records, the mismatch causes delays that take time to resolve.

And the framework has been changing. The 2025 reforms revised significant parts of Nigerian tax administration, so process descriptions date quickly.

Worth knowing

Check whether your company already has a TIN before applying for one. Since CAC and tax registration were integrated, companies are generally issued a TIN at incorporation, and founders following older guidance waste time applying for something they already hold.
