How to Write a Football Player Contract
A club employs a player for a number of seasons at a stated salary. Registration with the league is what actually makes the player eligible.
What a football player contract is
A player contract is the employment agreement between a footballer and a club, running for a stated number of seasons.
It is employment, and that framing matters. The player is an employee of the club, with the obligations and protections that implies, and the contract sits under employment law as well as under the rules of the football authorities.
Those football rules are the second layer and they are not optional. A contract alone does not make a player eligible: registration with the league and the relevant federation is what does, within defined transfer windows. A club that signs a player outside a window, or fails to register them properly, has a signed contract and an ineligible player.
For international transfers, the governing rules add further requirements, and the international transfer certificate process applies when a player moves between associations. Where a minor is involved, the restrictions are stricter still.

The player and the club
The contract names the player and the club employing them.
Use the player's full legal name as it appears on their identification and their registration documents. Football registration is document driven, and a discrepancy between the name on the contract and the name on the registration paperwork causes delays at precisely the moment a club needs a player available.
The player's date of birth is not asked here and should be confirmed separately, because age determines whether the player is a minor, and contracts with minors are restricted under football regulations. A club signing an underage player without following those rules risks sanction.
Name the club as the registered entity. Nigerian clubs vary in how they are constituted, and the contract should name the body that actually employs and pays, since that is the entity a player would pursue for unpaid wages.

- When the contract is signed. It matters against the transfer window and registration deadline, since a contract signed outside the window does not make a player eligible to play.
- Full Name of the Player

Football Player Contract
The term, the salary and the league
This step sets the length of the commitment and what the player is paid.
Football contracts run in seasons rather than calendar years, and the start and end dates should align with the season structure. A contract expiring mid season leaves both sides exposed: the club loses a player during a campaign, and the player is unregistered until the next window.
The salary field asks for an annual figure. State the currency, and state how it is actually paid: monthly, and by what date. Unpaid and late wages are a recurring problem in Nigerian football, and a contract that says only an annual number gives a player little to point to when payments stop arriving.
This is also where the terms the form does not ask about belong, and there are several that matter. Appearance and goal bonuses. Whether accommodation, transport or meals are provided. What happens if the player is injured and cannot play, which is the risk that most affects a footballer's livelihood. Image rights. And the terms on which either side can end the contract early.
Naming the league is not administrative detail. The league's rules bind the contract, including on registration, eligibility, disciplinary matters and dispute resolution, and many football disputes go to the association's own bodies rather than to the ordinary courts.

- The date when the contract will start
- When the contract begins. Align it with the season and confirm it falls within a registration window, because a player cannot be registered outside one however valid the contract.
- The date when the contract ends
- When it ends. An end date falling mid season causes problems for both sides, so match it to the close of a campaign.
- How much is the player's salary per year?
- The annual salary. State the currency and, importantly, how it is actually paid: monthly, and by what date. Late and unpaid wages are a recurring problem in Nigerian football, and an annual figure alone gives a player little to rely on. Register the player within the window

Can a club sign a player already under contract elsewhere?

Where are football disputes heard?
Frequently by the association's own dispute bodies rather than the ordinary courts, under the rules of the league named in the contract. That is one reason naming the league matters.
